In a country teetering on the edge of a cold civil war, where political disputes and sectarian tensions have eroded nearly all common ground, the passing of journalist Hoda Chedid has become a rare moment of unity. In a land where divisions run deep, she was a figure who brought together those who disagreed on everything, uniting them in their love for her.

Hoda Chedid was neither a representative of a great power nor the owner of immense wealth. She was not the leader of a major sect or a large political party. There was no reason for insincere flattery or opportunistic displays of affection, what the Lebanese expressed for her in her passing was genuine.

She was a journalist devoted to her profession, a colleague who formed sincere friendships with most in her field. She bridged divides, bringing together people who had little in common beyond their bond with her. She never flattered anyone in a debate or discussion, nor did she ever treat an opponent as an enemy for the sake of sectarian or political alignments. She never severed ties with anyone or resorted to boycotts.

Her greatest wealth was her heart, her integrity, and her unwavering love for her country. She saw all Lebanese as equals, and she had the courage to speak to them from this perspective, as a daughter of the nation who loved her land and its people.

The overwhelming outpouring of love following her passing should serve as a lesson to the Lebanese. It should remind them that the same qualities that drew each of them to Hoda Chedid are what could unite them with one another. Perhaps it is also what they long to find in one another but struggle to embody themselves.

In the mirror of Hoda Chedid, the Lebanese might glimpse the image they wish to reflect – one of honesty, integrity, dedication, humility, and love for their homeland. An image that affirms nothing in life is worthy of blind worship, for all things are fleeting. One cannot worship both God and the idols of wealth and power.

It is enough that this refined, kind, humble, compassionate, cultured, and patriotic Lebanese woman set a river of love in motion. She leaves behind a profound question: Why do you hate each other? Is love not easier than hatred? If you doubt it, ask Hoda. You have experienced hatred countless times, why not try love, just once?
