The scene within the entity during the general strike, which was called for by parties, unions, municipalities, and civil organisations, resembled the eve of civil war, according to analysts writing for major newspapers. This aligns with earlier predictions by the semi-official American magazine Foreign Affairs, which warned that the occupation entity is facing destruction post-conflict, whether through a scenario of far-right extremists seceding to form an independent state in the settlements, a civil war, or the collapse into a failed state.
The Philadelphi Corridor has become a symbol of deepening division, as opposition leaders contend there are no valid security reasons to maintain control over it. This position is echoed by the Minister of War, the Chief of Staff, the head of Mossad, and the head of Shin Bet – all of whom Netanyahu acknowledges disagree with him on this issue. Mocking their stance, Netanyahu reminded them that these same officials once claimed there would be no issues with withdrawing from Lebanon or Gaza, yet only problems followed those retreats.
In a press conference, Netanyahu firmly stated his position on the Philadelphi Corridor, dismissing comments allegedly made by U.S. President Joe Biden accusing him of not doing enough to secure a prisoner deal, saying, “I haven’t heard Biden’s remarks and I am surprised that he would say such things”. Netanyahu emphasised his commitment to reaching an agreement but pointed out, “We have not seen any positive steps from Hamas towards finalising a deal”. He insisted, “Our stance on the Philadelphi Corridor is unwavering and will not change, and I will not show any flexibility on sensitive and pivotal issues related to our security”.
Regarding the situation on the northern border with Lebanon, Netanyahu declared, “We cannot accept the current state of affairs in the north, and we are working to change it. We are determined to return the residents to their homes”. He added, “The security situation in the north can be altered through an agreement, but we are also prepared to change it through military operations”.
